What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Menopause: The Breakthrough Book on Natural Hormone Balance
John Lee, MD and Virginia Hopkins, Warner Books, 2004.

Over a decade ago, Dr. John Lee published his controversial conclusions about hormone replacement therapy (HRT):  synthetic hormones don't work and they may pose a health threat to women.  Years later, research has proved him right.  Hundreds of thousands of women have followed Dr. Lee's natural hormone program - experiencing amazing results.  Newly revised and updated, this revolutionary book features Dr. Lee's effective plan for restoring balance using bioidentical hormones, including natural progesterone.

Alyssa’s Review:  An extensively revised and updated version of the original book published by Dr John Lee.  As always his work is very readable and the information put forward is a rounded approach.  One of the pioneers of the use of natural hormones, diet and exercise, Dr Lee leads the way in treating menopausal symptoms.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause: Balance Your Hormones and Your Life from Thirty to Fifty

John Lee, MD; Jesse Hanley, MD and Virginia Hopkins, Warner Books, 1999.

You could be experiencing unexplained weight gain...fatigue...moodswings...loss of libido...fibroids...tender or lumpy breasts...endometriosis...PMS...infertility...memory loss...migrains...very heavy or light periods...cold hands and feet...or a combination of these symptoms.  You may have been told they're "nothing," or stress, or even menopause - and offered surgery, antidepressants, or prescription hormones.

But the startling truth is that you may be suffering from premenopause syndrome - and there are simple, safe solutions.  When John Lee wrote the groundbreaking What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About TM Menopause, younger women started asking if natural progesterone could help them too.  In this book, Dr. Lee, with women's health expert Jesse Hanley, M.D., brings you a revolutionary nonprescription "Balance Program" to restore you gynecological health, energy, and sex drive-and even slow the aging process before menopasue, and beyond.

Alyssa’s Review:  Another great collaboration with John Lee and a must read for any woman suffering PMS, fibroids, fibrocystic breasts, weight gain, fatigue, endometriosis, irregular or heavy periods, infertility, miscarriage, and other premenopausal hormone imbalance symptoms, in detail. Other issues such as stress, birth control pills, hysterectomy and cancer are also included. Dr. Hanley also addresses the emotional issues of PMS.

The Estrogen Alternative: A Guide to Natural Hormonal Balance
Raquel Martin and Judi Gerstung, D.C.
Foreword by John Hart, M.D.

More and more women are trying to find alternatives to synthetic hormones and their harmful side effects.  Yet despite the increasing awareness of the dangers of conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT), over-prescription of estrogen is still rampant, as is confusion among doctors and patients whether the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks.

This updated fourth edition of The Estrogen Alternative offers the laters information on how bioidentical progesterone therapy, also known as natural HRT, can provide safe, natural solutions for the numerous problems women face from hormone deficience and imbalance.

The authors sift through the many layers of misinformation and contradictory studies, warning against coporate-sponsored reasearch in a multi-billion dollar menopausal industry, and guide readers to natural alternatives.  This fourth edition also includes new information regarding estrogen dominance as a cause of prostate cancer in men, the dangers of a diet rich in soy contributing to thyroid disorders and estrogen overload, unsaturated oils causing hormone imbalance, and the connection between birth control (pills, shots, implants) and infertility.  The controversy over mammography and the importance of focusing on safer, more effective methods of cancer detection are also well documented.

Alyssa’s Review: This really is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to understand the politics and the facts being two much misunderstood hormones: oestrogen and progesterone.

The Cortisol Connection - Why stress makes you fat and ruins your health - and what you can do about it

Shawn Talbott, PhD

Cortisol is the body's primary stress hormone. Whenever we are under stress, or not getting enough sleep, or dieting (or even thinking about dieting), our cortisol levels rise - and bad things begin to happen.  Research has shown a close connection between high cortisol levels and serious health problems such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, depression and osteoporosis (and the notorious syndrome X).  Lowering cortisol levels helps to prevent these health problems and improve well-being.
The Cortisol Connection contains breakthrough information on:
  • ways to control cortisol and limit its negative effects by using dietary supplements, independantly or along with stress management, exercise and nutrition.
  • how other frequently-used supplements can actually increase cortisol levels and have a negative effect on long-term weight control.
  • vitamins herbs and supplements that counteract stressors and keep cortisol levels within a healthy range.
Dr. Talbott's research and recommendations are brought together in his easy-to-use SENSE program (Stress management; Exercise; Nutrition; Supplementation; Evaluation).  By using his brief, practical guidelines in each of these major catagories for controlling cortisol, readers can create their own dynamic programs for reducing stress, lowering cortisol, avoiding weight gain and improving long-term health.

Alyssa’s Review: A meaty lead that really begins to tackle how central stress and the hormone cortisol are so important to so many factors of health.
